Sexual Health and Finance in One

You'll never guess who is sponsoring the latest financial planning site for women, so I'll tell you: The makers of emergency contraception. The site name is What Will Your Plan Be? (Get it? Because emergency contraception is called Plan B.)

Now that is what I call "holistic financial planning" (which we often talk about in the world of financial journalism). When my boss showed me the press release about it, I was kind of speechless.

Well on one hand, of course I see how birth control and financial health are very related. Take this stat: For every $1 invested by the government in family planning, $4 is saved in Medicaid pregnancy-related expenditures, according to a new study from the Guttmacher Institute, a sexual and reproductive health advocacy organization (so, admittedly, biased).

On the other hand, it seems slightly disconcerting to try to educate women about finance via sexual health ... I can't tell if I'm supposed to feel empowered or offended? Maybe it's the cleverest marketing campaign yet. Who knows.

Hm... part of me thinks it's genius! The other is just plain confused.

Totally with you!

Keep in mind that the main objective of Barr (the maker of Plan B) is to advertise. They also are a large manufacturer of other oral contraceptives, which are preferable to Plan B. In short, they have a lot to gain from putting on an event like this.

Guttmacher is generally pretty reliable information, as they put together a couple of good peer reviewed journals if I remember correctly. Even if the number is wrong, it probably isn't too far off.

Just a few thoughts from Ellen's favorite pharmacist...

The pharmacist speaks! I'm so glad you weighed in. That's good to hear your stamp of approval of Guttmacher. I've used them before for stories, but I know their point of view is one that not everyone would always agree with...America is odd like that...

I think it's important to combine these topics. For a young woman, I think the biggest financial threat is having a baby unexpectedly. I checked out the site and the design is too fancy and not particularly useful. However, I think that Plan B's marketing is both genius and comforting, which is important in uncertain times.

Thanks for the comment, Leslie! I agree that it probably is a genius marketing campaign, and also that the biggest financial threat to the financial health of women is unplanned pregnancy. Now, I still look skeptically upon any marketing campaign, because, even when the campaign is helpful, if they are pushing a product, we always should have a critical eye. Call me a cynical journalist ... :)

Your body has a system that ensures that he will not live forever. However, you can change the advantage of this mechanism, so you can turn your aging, or at least slow down the process. Sex is one of many ways of manipulation.
