Oh yes, you are very right... And that's exactly why I'm slightly fed up with the tradition.

The gender roles are messed up to begin with. First, maybe some men would be good at/would like to plan a wedding but culturally we have pushed them out. Second, there's plenty of women (like this one) who don't think it sounds very interesting to plan a wedding, just like I don't think arts and crafts are interesting. Am I supposed to care about how many tiers the cake is? Because I don't.

But with that said, I'm sure when it happens, I'll rise to the occasion and be super obnoxious -- I just hope you can really do it in under 10 hours a week.

Ellie, if you really think about it, I bet 90% of women would say they'd freak out or expect their wedding not to live up to their hopes if their fiance's spent the majority of the time between the two planning it.

If my girlfriend let me plan out future wedding, I'm willing to guarantee it would be 0% what she wanted and I'd have to live it down for the next forever. We learned a long time ago that the wedding is the bride's day and to go along with whatever she wants. Do you really think we care what color the bride's maids dresses are or how many tiers the cake is? No, I just want to know how many friends I'm allowed to invite and where it is and whether we can have a band or a DJ.

Thanks for your comment -- I can relate to having bad financial habits in the past, as I used to rack up ridiculous credit card debt and phone bills out of sheer stupidity. I enjoyed reading your story. As I said on your post, I especially understand what it's like to associate with people who have different financial situations. Ellie, thank you for writing about such an important topic! I am very passionate about financial literacy, and am involved in a campaign at the College where I work to make financial literacy training and resources available to students.

I always say there are two kinds of "experts" to go to for financial advice...those who did everything right and those who did everything wrong (and have since repented!) I definitely belong to the second category.

I'd like to see Google do more to improve their Google Scholar service. I graduated school many years ago, and now that I've lost that affiliation with my university it is so difficult to penetrate the "walled garden" surrounding peer-reviewed material. J-Stor is a much more comprehensive database, but very exclusive.

Likewise, I wish that news archives were "googlized" as well, so that they are more accessible and easily searchable to someone who doesn't have a corporate or educational account. $11 for an old article is steep!

As a Gen Yer I couldn’t agree more with what you have to say in this post. Each generation has its own unique characteristics and no two generations can be expected to behave the same. What Baby boomers think is laziness and lack of work ethic is what Gen Y calls ‘working smart’. Since Gen Yers are tech-savvy they get their work done faster and hence don’t need to put in longer work hours. As mentioned by Vineet Nayar in his book ‘Employees first, customers second’, Gen Y employees are more collaborative. These positive attributes of Gen Y can be used to the advantage of an organization.

Thanks for your comment. I do really enjoy examining the impact of different generations on the workforce -- and how they interact! I'm sure it's true with dating as well. I can't believe how big of a role Facebook plays in dating for people my age, for instance. Facebook started while I was in college, so I've definitely gotten to see how it's affected our relationships.

Nice to find your website and see you combing the needs of the GenY and Boomer generations. Have you ever heard of Al Duncan? He's described as The Millenial Mentor, and your very specific points about how the GenY employees and Boomers have different work styles as well as communication styles. It's interesting to me to with my work in Dating and Relationships to talk and coach both groups. The GenY folks often tend towards texting and text dates while the Boomers are definitely wanting to meet and communicate in person. Ultimately, they are both spheres of relationship and interaction. Are you over at twitter at all? I'd love to connect you and Al. I think the cross dialogue might prove intriguing. You can also just simply search for him over at FB.

@Natalie -- Thanks for your eloquent points. I totally agree. I have read predictions that we might see a continuing trend toward "turning things off" as a backlash to our over-connectivity. Maybe centuries from now there will even be some sort of technological Ice Age!

Shutting down sounds good to me, she says as she responds to blog comments after a long day of being on her computer...:)

But even if we can't shut down, I think the point about minimalism is that we at least want nice clean interfaces to do our ridiculous amount of communication. I think Gen Y will need to streamline as much as possible -- to at least help our filters out a bit.

As a lover of both technology and minimalism, I think what you're describing as a contradiction might actually be a causal relation: minimalism as a response to technology.

So-called Millennials have grown up with more easily accessible information than any generation before, and our filters haven't quite caught up. Minimalism is a kind of overcorrection, an aesthetic response to Geocities and a practical response to 24-hour real-time news cycles.

My observation suggests that older people who have embraced new tech tools and social media have also embraced that minimalism. Correlation isn't causation, but I think it deserves some thought.

For real though, everyone is different and I'm not really here to condescend. How can anyone judge an individual situation? I go through periods where I am not able to save.

But my point is really that it's interesting and telling to analyze savings trends on the whole. One could argue that if everyone is gambling on not having an emergency, we are in big trouble from a public policy standpoint down the line. That's not a Y thing; that's definitely an American thing.

Even though we might not agree, I appreciate your perspective.
You can say "I told you so" when I die at 35 and don't get to use my 401k.

An easy fix for companies is to at least only make internships part-time and for school credit if they can't afford to pay. I did that for a few weeks over a Christmas break one time. I had to wait tables in the evening, but it still proved useful to have that big company on my resume.

I know you don't agree with this comment, but I think some Yers (this one included) simply can't afford to have a savings with every penny of every paycheck budgeted for one purpose or another.

Well, it's true we don't know the reasons for sure -- circumstance is one but also not caring is a possibility (this is true for all Americans across generations). I'm not going to pretend I don't know people who could be saving and don't for a variety of reasons.
